What we cover

Plumbing services across the North Shore

Asset Plumbing & Drainage handle the plumbing side of a property: the pressurised supply coming in, the hot water system, the fixtures and tapware, and the waste pipework attached to them. If it is inside the building line, it is on this page.

The work splits fairly evenly between three kinds of call. Something has failed and needs fixing. Something is being renovated and needs planning. Or a building has ongoing maintenance obligations, which is most of the commercial and rental work.

Dominic and Tyler do the work themselves, so there is no gap between the person who looks at the job and the person who quotes it.

Where plumbing stops and drainage starts

Roughly at the building line. Inside it, supply and fixtures, which is us. Outside and below ground, gravity drainage, which is the drainlaying side of the same business. It matters because the two get confused constantly, and the wrong trade turning up wastes a morning. If you are not sure which you need, describe what you are seeing and we will tell you.

How we work

The same approach on every job

Diagnose before quoting

Plumbing is mostly hidden. We would rather spend twenty minutes finding out what is actually wrong than give you a number that changes once the wall is open.

Set out against the real fittings

Mixer heights, tap centres and waste positions get measured against the fitting being installed, not a standard dimension. It is why our fit-offs land where they should.

Told what can wait

Not everything needs doing now. If a repair will hold for another two years we will say so and let you decide where the money goes.

Both trades in one business

When a plumbing job turns out to be drainage, or the other way round, nothing gets handed to a stranger. Same team, same phone number.

Records where they matter

Commercial work, backflow testing and warrant of fitness items all come with paperwork. Dominic’s commercial background means that side is handled rather than improvised.

The room left clean

Fit-off happens after the tiling. We work around the other trades and leave the space in a state the owner can use.

Before you call

Things worth knowing first

None of this is essential, but it makes the first phone call much more useful.

Where the toby is

The main shutoff for the property, usually near the street boundary under a small lid. Knowing where it is turns a burst pipe from a flood into an inconvenience, and it is worth finding on a dry day rather than a wet one.

How old the house is

Pre-1970 on the North Shore usually means galvanised supply somewhere in the system, and that changes what is likely wrong and what a repair will cost. It is the single most useful thing you can tell us on the phone.

Whether one fixture or all of them

One slow basin is a fixture problem. Everything slow at once is a main line problem, which is drainage rather than plumbing. This one detail decides which half of the business you need.

What the tapware is going to be

On any renovation, the selection drives the set-out. If it is not chosen yet, the rough-in either waits or gets guessed, and guessing means moving pipework after the linings are on.

On phone quotes. We do not give them, because the job described at the door and the job behind the wall are rarely the same. What we will do is tell you honestly whether it sounds like an hour, a day, or something that needs looking at this week.

Drainage

When the job is actually drainage

Some of what people ring a plumber about is not plumbing. Water surfacing at a gully trap outside, a whole house draining slowly, a driveway that floods every winter, tree roots in a main line. All of that is below-ground work outside the building line.

Asset Plumbing & Drainage do that side too, under the drainlaying arm and on a separate site, because it is a different specialty with a different set of equipment behind it. Drain laying, relaying, CCTV surveys, stormwater, subsoil and septic tanks all sit there.

The practical benefit is that you only make one phone call. If what you describe turns out to be drainage, the same two people handle it rather than referring you on.

Questions

Questions about our plumbing services

Do you charge to come and look?

For small repairs we work on time and materials from when we arrive, so the look and the fix are usually the same visit. For larger work, a bathroom, a renovation or a cylinder replacement, we come and assess it and then put a written quote together. Tell us which kind of job you think it is when you ring and we will be clear about how it is charged before we turn up.

How quickly can you get to a job?

It depends on the week and where you are. We are a two-man business rather than a franchise with a fleet, which means the diary is honest but it is not infinite. If something is actively leaking, say so on the phone and we will tell you straight away whether we can get there or whether you are better off ringing someone else. We would rather do that than book you in and let you down.

Do you do gasfitting or califonts?

Gasfitting is a separately certified trade in New Zealand and it is not listed as a service on this site. If your job involves gas, mention it when you ring and we will be honest about whether it is something we can take on or whether you need a certifying gasfitter. We are not going to imply a certification we have not put in front of you.

Can you work with my builder on a renovation?

Yes, and it goes much better when we are talking to them early. Plumbing rough-in has to happen at a specific point in the programme, before linings and after framing, and the fit-off comes after waterproofing and tiling. If we are brought in at the right time the job is straightforward. If we are brought in late, the choices narrow and the costs go up.

Do you take on commercial and property management work?

Yes. Dominic spent eight years on commercial projects around Auckland, so staged work in tenanted buildings, backflow device testing and building warrant of fitness items are familiar territory. Rental portfolios work well too, because the same handful of problems recur and having someone who already knows the building saves a lot of explaining every time.

Not sure which service you need?

Describe what is happening and we will tell you which it is, including when the answer is that you do not need a plumber at all. Dominic or Tyler will take the call.
